World Voice Day – 16th April

World Voice Day: An Overview

Today (April 16th, 2023), World Voice Day is celebrated worldwide. The main goal of World Voice Day is to: bring awareness to the importance of being expressive and able to communicate with the voice, shine a light on the significance of vocal health and encouraging anyone with concerns to reach out.

The American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Voice Committee members are tasked with developing a theme each year. This year the theme is “Your Voice Matters.”

With that in mind, we want to highlight some of the main symptoms of voice disorders, so you can be aware of them and reach out to a physician for any concerns early. The symptoms are:

  • The voice making a quivering sound
  • The voice sounding strained or choppy
  • A change in the pitch of voice, whether too low or high
  • The voice sounding rough or harsh
  • The voice being weak, breathy, or whispery

Head & Neck Cancer Awareness Month

Not only is April the month where World Voice Day is celebrated, but it is also Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Month (along with Oral, Head & Neck Cancer Awareness Week from the 16th – 22nd April 2023)! Because Voice Day also focuses on vocal health, it is essential to look out for the signs and symptoms of head and neck cancer, as many of the symptoms have to do with the mouth and throat, things that we use to be vocal and express ourselves.

Head and neck cancer symptoms include but are not limited to a lump or sore that does not heal, non-healing ulcer, change in ability to swallow and change in voice. These symptoms could also be linked to something that proves to be less severe, but it is essential to consult a physician.

The voice is our means to communicate, it is imperative that it is taken care of and to find ways to preserve it.
