Understanding Endometriosis: Signs and Symptoms /understanding-endometriosis-signs-and-symptoms/ /understanding-endometriosis-signs-and-symptoms/#respond Thu, 08 Jun 2023 14:17:29 +0000 /?p=8818 The post Understanding Endometriosis: Signs and Symptoms appeared first on Integra Healthcare Ltd.

]]>
Endometriosis is a common gynecological disorder that affects many women worldwide. This condition occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus, known as endometrium, grows outside the uterus. To shed light on this often-misunderstood condition, we will delve into what endometriosis is, its risk factors, and the symptoms women may experience. Endometriosis is a chronic condition where endometrial-like tissue implants itself on organs within the pelvic region, such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and intestines. Unlike the normal endometrial tissue that sheds during menstruation, these implants have no means of exit, leading to inflammation, scarring, and the formation of adhesions.

Several factors may increase a woman’s susceptibility to developing endometriosis, including:

 • Family History: Having a first-degree relative with endometriosis elevates the risk.
 • Early Menarche: Starting menstruation at an early age.
 • Menstrual Flow Abnormalities: Experiencing heavy or prolonged periods.
 • Reproductive Disorders: Conditions like uterine abnormalities or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
 • Immunological Dysfunction: Weakened immune response allowing endometrial tissue to implant and grow. The symptoms of endometriosis can vary from woman to woman, with some experiencing severe pain while others may have minimal discomfort.

Common symptoms include:

 • Pelvic Pain: Chronic pelvic pain that may worsen during menstruation.
 • Painful Periods: Intense cramping and lower back pain during menstruation.
 • Painful Intercourse: Discomfort or pain during sexual intercourse.
 • Gastrointestinal Issues: Bowel or urinary disturbances, such as diarrhea, constipation, or painful bowel movements.
 • Infertility: Difficulties conceiving due to scarring and adhesions affecting the reproductive organs.
Endometriosis is a complex condition requiring a comprehensive diagnosis and treatment approach. Identifying the risk factors associated with endometriosis and recognizing its symptoms is crucial to seeking appropriate care. If you suspect you have endometriosis or are experiencing symptoms, consulting with a healthcare professional can provide the guidance and support needed to manage this condition effectively. In the Cayman Islands, women with endometriosis can access various treatment options tailored to their needs. At Integra Healthcare a team of senior, tertiary, OB/GYNs are passionate about identifying endometriosis and providing endometriosis care & treatment for a condition that causes so many women a distressing set of symptoms. Uterine Fibroids: Signs and Symptoms /uterine-fibroids-signs-symptoms/ /uterine-fibroids-signs-symptoms/#respond Sun, 04 Jun 2023 05:01:00 +0000 /?p=8674 The post Uterine Fibroids: Signs and Symptoms appeared first on Integra Healthcare Ltd.

]]>

Uterine fibroids, also known as leiomyomas, are noncancerous growths that develop within the muscular wall of the uterus. While they are generally harmless, they can cause many women a range of symptoms and discomfort.

We will explore the signs and symptoms of uterine fibroids, shedding light on this common condition that affects numerous women worldwide.

1. Heavy or Prolonged Menstrual Bleeding:

One of the most common symptoms associated with uterine fibroids is heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding. Women with fibroids may experience longer-lasting periods with increased blood flow, often resulting in the need to change sanitary products frequently. This excessive bleeding can lead to fatigue and anemia over time.

2. Pelvic Pain and Pressure:

Uterine fibroids can cause pelvic pain and pressure due to their size and location. Depending on their place within the uterus, fibroids may exert pressure* on nearby organs, such as the bladder or rectum, leading to discomfort or feeling of fullness in the pelvic region. Some women may also experience lower back pain or pain during sexual intercourse.

*Pelvic pain and pressure could potentially also be a sign of an ovarian cyst. View more on ovarian cysts and their symptoms in our article here.

3. Urinary and Bowel Problems:

Larger fibroids that press against the bladder can cause frequent urination or difficulty emptying the bladder, resulting in a frequent urge to urinate or an increased frequency of urinary tract infections. Fibroids near the rectum can create pressure, leading to constipation or difficulty with bowel movements.

4. Abdominal Enlargement and Swelling:

In some cases, uterine fibroids can cause the abdomen to appear enlarged or swollen. This symptom is more common in women with multiple or larger fibroids. As fibroids grow in size, they can give the abdomen a distended appearance, resembling a pregnancy.

5. Menstrual Irregularities:

Apart from heavy bleeding, uterine fibroids can also cause menstrual irregularities. Some women may experience shorter or longer menstrual cycles, irregular bleeding between periods, or missed periods. These changes in menstrual patterns are often attributed to hormonal imbalances caused by fibroids.

World No Tobacco Day – 31st May /world-no-tobacco-day-31st-may-2/ /world-no-tobacco-day-31st-may-2/#respond Wed, 31 May 2023 05:01:00 +0000 /?p=8697 The post World No Tobacco Day – 31st May appeared first on Integra Healthcare Ltd.

May 31st is observed as World No Tobacco Day. At Integra, we join in supporting World No Tobacco Day, increasing education around tobacco/smoking’s detrimental effects along with some information on how to get in touch with our team to discuss any questions, concerns or information on smoking cessation.

Smoking has numerous health risks. According to the NHS, smoking causes 7 out of 10 cases of lung cancer (70%). Tobacco can not only cause damage in the lungs but other parts of the body, such as the mouth, throat, larynx, bladder, and stomach, to name a few. Significant health risks can arise from the effects of tobacco, such as heart attacks, heart disease, strokes, pneumonia, etc.

The earlier you quit tobacco use (or avoid it altogether!) the less of a chance you can have for being at risk of being diagnosed with serious conditions and illnesses. The World Health Organization (WHO) shared (below) the positive impacts of smoking cessation for your heart health and how your risk of having coronanry disease or strokes can be reduced to that of a non-smoker between 5-15 years after you’ve stopped smoking!

Aside from the obvious impacts of reducing risk of illness and diseases such as lung cancer & heart disease, saying no to tobacco can also help with more sustainable food production.

WHO have made this year’s theme for World No Tobacco Day 2023, “Grow Food, Not Tobacco”, urging us to prioritize agriculture that nourishes our bodies and promotes a healthier, tobacco-free world.

By prioritising sustainable food production, WHO states that we can mitigate the environmental impact of tobacco farming, promote food security and improve public health (as the availability of tobacco is reduced).

Wednesday, 17th May 2023, was World Hypertension Day! As part of Integra’s efforts to raise awareness and increase education for World Hypertension Day and beyond, we launched a 3-part short blog series on hypertension. We posted our first blog post on Wednesday all about ‘Understanding the Updated Hypertension Guidelines’. Thursday’s blog post was about ‘The Importance of Accurate Blood Pressure Measurements’. Today we look at ‘The Addition of Sleep as a factor in Hypertension’.

Sleep is a fundamental aspect of our overall well-being, contributing significantly to our physical and mental health. Recent research has shed light on the intricate relationship between sleep and hypertension, emphasising the importance of quality sleep in managing this condition. Furthermore, individuals experiencing poor sleep should be particularly attentive to the potential risk of hypertension. In this article, we delve into the vital connection between sleep and hypertension while urging those with inadequate sleep to remain vigilant.

Studies have consistently highlighted the strong correlation between insufficient sleep and hypertension. During sleep, our bodies undergo critical vital processes that help regulate blood pressure. Disruptions in sleep patterns, such as sleep apnoea or insomnia, can lead to hormonal imbalances, and increased sympathetic nervous system activity, contributing to elevated blood pressure levels. Recognising this connection emphasises the significance of quality sleep in managing hypertension.

Quality sleep plays a vital role in maintaining healthy blood pressure levels. By ensuring adequate restful sleep, individuals can support the body’s natural mechanisms for blood pressure regulation. Sufficient sleep promotes cardiovascular health, reduces arterial stiffness, and supports the body’s ability to maintain optimal blood pressure throughout the day. Prioritising sleep quality becomes even more crucial for those managing or at risk of hypertension.

Individuals experiencing poor sleep should be vigilant about the potential risk of hypertension. Persistent sleep problems, such as insomnia, sleep apnoea, or restless leg syndrome, may indicate underlying health issues, including hypertension. Monitoring blood pressure regularly and seeking medical advice if sleep difficulties persist can help identify and address hypertension at an early stage.

Sleep Hygiene and Hypertension Management:

Healthy sleep hygiene practices can positively impact blood pressure management. Establishing a consistent sleep schedule, creating a sleep-friendly environment, practicing relaxation techniques, and limiting electronic device usage before bed can improve sleep quality. By integrating these habits into daily routines, individuals can reduce their risk of hypertension and promote overall cardiovascular health.

Understanding the crucial link between sleep and hypertension reinforces the significance of quality sleep in managing this condition. Poor sleep should serve as a red flag, prompting individuals to remain vigilant and initiative-taking in monitoring their blood pressure levels. By prioritising restful sleep and adopting healthy sleep hygiene practices, we can mitigate the risk of hypertension, promote better cardiovascular health, and enjoy a more vibrant and fulfilling life.

We hope you have found this three-part blog series interesting and insightful. If you have any questions or concerns, please get in touch with our team at Integra to book an appointment by calling 745-7450.

Yesterday, 17th May 2023, was World Hypertension Day! As part of Integra’s efforts to raise awareness and increase education for World Hypertension Day and beyond, we have launched a 3-part short blog series on hypertension. We posted our first blog post yesterday on ‘Understanding the Updated Hypertension Guidelines’. Today’s blog is on ‘The Importance of Accurate Blood Pressure Measurements’.

Accurate blood pressure (BP) measurements are fundamental to hypertension management, particularly with the update to the hypertension guidelines as discussed in the 1st blog post of this series. As one of the most prevalent medical conditions globally, hypertension requires precise monitoring to ensure effective treatment and minimize the risk of complications.

By obtaining precise readings, healthcare providers can:

 • Identify individuals with consistently elevated blood pressure levels and initiate appropriate interventions
 • Assess the effectiveness of prescribed medications and lifestyle modifications over a period of time
 • Receive valuable information on how well the treatment plan works and if adjustments are necessary
 • Regularly assess an individual’s risk for cardiovascular events; being able to identify precise fluctuations or persistent elevations that may increase the risk of heart attacks, stroke or other complications
 • Tailor treatment strategies to individual patients, ensuring optimal blood pressure control and reducing the risk of cardiovascular complications
 • Stratify patients based on their risk levels and make informed decisions regarding treatment intensity, the addition or medications or lifestyle modifications

Inaccurate measurements, whether due to improper technique or faulty equipment, can lead to misdiagnosis and/or potentially resulting in a delay in all of what’s mentioned above! Therefore, utilising accurate measurement techniques is vital in establishing an accurate diagnosis of hypertension.

While it is great for individuals with hypertension (or those at-risk) to track their blood pressure levels on an everyday basis using home blood pressure monitors, it is important to ensure you are still visiting your GP to get your BP professionally checked to ensure your at-home measurements match what the precise readings at the clnic are stating. Additionally GPs can ensure the appropriate measures are taken before taking your blood pressure (e.g. the proper seating position, not speaking for 5 minutes before doing the reading and so on), which is vital.

By ensuring accurate BP measurements through proper technique and appropriate monitoring devices, healthcare professionals and patients can work together to achieve optimal blood pressure control, reduce complications, and promote better overall health. Accurate measurements serve as a cornerstone in the effective management of hypertension, enabling individuals to lead healthier lives and prevent long-term cardiovascular consequences.

At Integra, you can get precise, blood pressure screenings. For more information on how to book an appointment for this service, click here.

Today 17th May 2023, is World Hypertension Day! As part of Integra’s efforts to raise awareness and increase education for World Hypertension Day and beyond, we will be doing a 3-part short blog series on hypertension starting today. Today’s short blog is on ‘Understanding the Updated Hypertension Guidelines’.

Hypertension, generally known as high blood pressure, is a condition where the force of blood against the walls of the arteries is consistently elevated. It is a significant risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and other complications and affects millions worldwide. To help manage this condition, various organisations issue guidelines to healthcare professionals regarding diagnosis and treatment.

In 2017, the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) released updated hypertension guidelines that differed from previous recommendations.

The new guidelines lowered the threshold for diagnosing hypertension from:

 • A systolic blood pressure (the top number) of 140 mm Hg or higher to 130 mm Hg or higher
 • A diastolic blood pressure (the bottom number) of 90 mm Hg or higher to 80 mm Hg or higher

This meant that more people were now classified as having hypertension.

In addition to the lower thresholds, the guidelines also emphasized the importance of lifestyle modifications as a first-line treatment for hypertension, including weight loss, regular physical activity, and a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Medications are still recommended for those with hypertension at high risk of heart disease or other comorbidities.

The updated guidelines also introduced a new elevated blood pressure category with a systolic blood pressure between 120-129 mm Hg and a diastolic blood pressure less than 80 mm Hg. People with elevated blood pressure are at increased risk of developing hypertension and are advised to make lifestyle changes to prevent the condition from worsening.

It is important to note that these guidelines are specific to the American population and may not always apply to other countries or regions. Additionally, guidelines are not meant to replace clinical judgment and should be used with a healthcare provider’s expertise.

Dr Bhakta-Perry, our newest member of our GP team at Integra Healthcare, comments on the updated guidelines and the importance of individuals booking a checkup with a GP:

“Here in the Cayman Islands we have a population that is rich in diversity. With this brings different risk factors for hypertension and cardiovascular disease (CVD). We use a combination of the American, British (NICE) and European guidelines alongside each individual’s risk factors, clinical history and examination to help in diagnosis and to formulate their personalised management plan.

The guidelines all overlap and the overriding message is that they all diagnose hypertension from 130-140 systolic/80-90 diastolic which is something people can bear in mind when measuring their BP. If you are close to this range or at/above this range, it is important to speak to your family physician /general practitioner so that you can get tailored advice on management and prevention of debilitating complications such as heart attacks and strokes. Hypertension is easily manageable and there are a variety of both pharmacological and non pharmacological options.”

We hope this short article has helped in better understanding the updated hypertension guidelines. If you notice your BP measurements are around the updated measurements classed as hypertension it is important to reach out to a GP.

GPs can firstly do a professional reading to ensure your blood pressure measurements are as accurate as possible and if your readings confirm a diagnosis of hypertension, they can as Dr Bhakta-Perry mentions, offer some advice on managing this condition in addition to much more!

To book an appointment with one of our GPs at Integra or schedule your blood pressure screening, please contact us at 745-7450.

Black Maternal Health Week /black-maternal-health-week/ /black-maternal-health-week/#respond Thu, 20 Apr 2023 18:28:06 +0000 /?p=8474 The post Black Maternal Health Week appeared first on Integra Healthcare Ltd.

]]>

Black Maternal Health Week was celebrated in April 2023 from the 11th to the 17th.

Our article, with commentary from our Registered Midwife Allie Campbell, offers some insight into the shocking and eye-opening statistics on Black maternal health, raising awareness of the issues Black women still face in the maternity system. We share some resources for Black women from organisations such as Five X More who offer the ‘six steps’ guide, including steps they can take to help improve their care. This article also stresses the importance of healthcare professionals continuing to join in on the conversation of Black maternal health and working together to offer a better healthcare system for all, regardless of race.

Eye-opening statistics

Our Registered Midwife at Integra Healthcare, Allie Campbell offered some insight into the disparities that still exist in the maternity system for Black women, in her video here.

Some statistics shared by her included research that Black women in the UK are 3.7 times more likely to die in childbirth and postpartum (Source: MBRACE, 2022). The CDC also notes, in the US in 2021, Black women were 2.6 times more likely to die.

Kaiser Family Foundation, also states:

“Research has documented that social and economic factors, racism, and chronic stress contribute to poor maternal and infant health outcomes, including higher rates of perinatal depression and preterm birth among African American women and higher rates of mortality among Black infants.”

With these horrifying and eye-opening statistics, it is vital that we, as healthcare professionals, continue to join in raising awareness of this important cause and work together for ways to create positive change in the maternity system.

‘The Six Steps’

The purpose of Black Maternal Health Week is not only to raise awareness but amplify the voice of Black women.

Allie also shared very insightful information from Five X More, where it advises Black women on the six steps to navigate the maternity system and ways they can help improve their care.

The six steps are as follows:

 • Speak Up
 • Trust Your Gut
 • Seek a Second Opinion
 • Document
 • Find an Advocate
 • Do your Research!

Starting the Conversation

Race should not define the health that a woman receives within the healthcare system. Problems can only be resolved if they are brought to light. The statistics above highlighted this past Black Maternal Awareness Week sheds light that there is a problem that is not adequately spoken about because it has been such a taboo topic for a long time.

At Integra Healthcare, we join Allie and the many others encouraging education and greater awareness on black maternal health. It is the sharing of these issues and inequalities that helps start the conversation that turns into taking action to help ensure black maternal health needs will continue to be addressed, ensuring that black women will be advocated for in regard to getting the proper healthcare she and her child need to be healthy, just as much as pregnant women of any other race. As Allie states:

“…it is our job as healthcare professionals to change those statistics and challenge the institutional racism that is still quite clearly evident.”

World Voice Day: An Overview

Today (April 16th, 2023), World Voice Day is celebrated worldwide. The main goal of World Voice Day is to: bring awareness to the importance of being expressive and able to communicate with the voice, shine a light on the significance of vocal health and encouraging anyone with concerns to reach out.

The American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Voice Committee members are tasked with developing a theme each year. This year the theme is “Your Voice Matters.”

With that in mind, we want to highlight some of the main symptoms of voice disorders, so you can be aware of them and reach out to a physician for any concerns early. The symptoms are:

 • The voice making a quivering sound
 • The voice sounding strained or choppy
 • A change in the pitch of voice, whether too low or high
 • The voice sounding rough or harsh
 • The voice being weak, breathy, or whispery

Head & Neck Cancer Awareness Month

Not only is April the month where World Voice Day is celebrated, but it is also Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Month (along with Oral, Head & Neck Cancer Awareness Week from the 16th – 22nd April 2023)! Because Voice Day also focuses on vocal health, it is essential to look out for the signs and symptoms of head and neck cancer, as many of the symptoms have to do with the mouth and throat, things that we use to be vocal and express ourselves.

Head and neck cancer symptoms include but are not limited to a lump or sore that does not heal, non-healing ulcer, change in ability to swallow and change in voice. These symptoms could also be linked to something that proves to be less severe, but it is essential to consult a physician.

The voice is our means to communicate, it is imperative that it is taken care of and to find ways to preserve it.

If you are experiencing these symptoms or have any other concerns, please contact us to book an appointment with our physician Dr. Yammine, who specialises in Otolaryngology (ENT), Head and Neck Surgery, Laryngology, and Cosmetic Surgery at Integra Healthcare.
