Dr. Brenda Mulenga is a UK trained Consultant Ophthalmologist and Lead Ophthalmologist at Integra Healthcare Cayman Islands, providing specialist eye care for both adults and children across the full spectrum of Comprehensive Ophthalmology.
Dr. Mulenga graduated from the Leicester Warwick Medical School’s accelerated medical programme as part of the Inaugural cohort, following her First-Class Honours Bsc/Bsc Degree in Biomedical Science with Chemistry. She completed the pioneering, pilot Ophthalmic Specialist Training (OST) “Run through” programme with the North Western Deanery, United Kingdom, at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, a leading UK tertiary Eye Centre and one of the largest specialist eye units in Europe; a globally recognized center for advanced eye care and respected leader in vision research, innovation, and education. Dr Mulenga received comprehensive general medical and surgical ophthalmic training culminating with the award of Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth) and Certificate of Completion of Training in Ophthalmology (CCT-General Medical Council – UK).
Dr. Mulenga subsequently undertook subspecialty fellowship-level training in Paediatric Ophthalmology at Queensland Children’s Hospital in Brisbane, Australia.
Dr Mulenga brings over nine years of international consultant-level experience across the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, and the Cayman Islands, with specialist interests and clinical expertise in;
- Comprehensive Ophthalmology with an emphasis on Eye Health screening and wellbeing
- Emergency Ophthalmology
- Glaucoma, anterior segment / cornea disease and ocular inflammatory disease
- Medical Retina and Diabetic eye disease
- Paediatric Ophthalmology, Neuro-Ophthalmology and strabismus
- Intravitreal Injections, Retina and Glaucoma Laser therapies
- Minor procedures including biopsies
- Cataract, Strabismus, Pterygium and Oculoplastic surgery
Alongside her clinical work, Dr. Mulenga has a strong interest in service transformation, development and Healthcare leadership. During her time working within the Cayman Islands Health Services Authority (CIHSA), Dr Mulenga played a key role and contributed to the continued development and strengthening of the Ophthalmology service, driving improvements in patient access, operational efficiency, service delivery, patient experience and customer care, with the Eye Department achieving patient satisfaction scores well above the Hospital average. These efforts formed part of the wider service progress recognized through the Best of Cayman Islands Eye Care Services Silver Awards in 2024.
Dr. Mulenga holds an MBA in Healthcare Management and maintains full professional registration with the General Medical Council (UK), the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (Canada), the Medical Council of New Zealand, and the Medical and Dental Council of the Cayman Islands.
Dr. Mulenga brings a compassionate, collaborative, and holistic approach to patient care, with a strong commitment to patient education and engagement as central elements of achieving the best long-term outcomes. She believes that effective eye care is built on partnership, working closely with patients, families, and the wider healthcare team to deliver personalized treatment plans that support understanding, confidence, empowerment and continuity of care.
Outside clinical practice, Dr. Mulenga enjoys spending time with her supportive family and remains deeply committed to serving the Cayman Islands community.
