9 Things To Know – Measles & The Caribbean Region
Measles cases are making headlines again—not because it’s here in Cayman yet, but because rising cases in nearby countries increase the risk of it reaching our shores. Here’s what parents and families in the Cayman Islands and the Caribbean region need to know— with guidance from your trusted paediatric team at Integra.
1. Measles Is Back in the Region
Recent reports show a 29‑fold increase in confirmed measles cases across the Americas region compared to last year – over 7,000 cases so far, primarily in the U.S. PAHO (Pan American Health Organization) confirmed that Latin America is also experiencing disease outbreaks, with Brazil and Argentina reporting hundreds of confirmed cases between 2024 and 2025. These countries are key travel and transit hubs, and the movement of people between South America and the Caribbean increases the risk of imported cases. Though Cayman hasn’t seen any confirmed cases yet, international travel and links to the U.S. increase our exposure risk.
2. Cayman Is Prepared
Cayman’s Ministry of Health along with health clinics like ours have strong surveillance and rapid response plans for infectious diseases. MMR (Mumps, Measles and Rubella) vaccine clinics are regularly offered, and the molecular lab can confirm measles diagnoses quickly.
3. Measles Is Highly Contagious
If one person has it, they can infect 12–18 others in a susceptible population. The measles virus spreads via coughs and sneezes, and can linger in the air or on surfaces for up to two hours.
4. MMR Vaccine Provides Strong Protection
Two doses of the measles vaccine give about 97% protection. In Cayman, the first dose is usually given at 12–15 months, with a booster at 1.5 years of age or around school entry.
5. Vaccination Doesn’t Stop at Home
Children travelling abroad—especially to the U.S.—should be fully vaccinated at least 2 weeks before departure. An early MMR is advised for infants aged 6–11 months if necessary.
6. Check Your Family’s Vaccine Records
Parents should verify that all doses are up to date. Missing records or incomplete vaccinations? Integra’s paediatricians (Dr. Jaques, Dr. Newton, Dr. Bugembe, Dr. Balang) can review and administer any needed doses. They adhere to the Cayman immunisation schedule and ensure safe, timely care.
7. Be Alert for Early Symptoms
Measles is a viral disease that usually starts with fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and then a red blotchy rash. If your child shows these signs, especially after travel, call Integra or the Ministry of Health right away. Early detection of suspected cases is key to preventing spread.
8. Healthy Habits Help
In addition to vaccination, frequent handwashing, disinfecting high‑touch surfaces, and keeping unwell children home (for at least 24 hours after fever subsides) are important steps .
