Cervical Cancer: What Every Patient Should Know

Cervical Cancer: What Every Patient Should Know
January 6, 2026

Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, yet many people still miss out on lifesaving screening. With regular cervical screening, including Pap smears and HPV testing, abnormal cell changes can be found early—often before symptoms appear—allowing for timely treatment and excellent outcomes. At Integra Healthcare, we are committed to empowering our patients with knowledge and access to preventive care.

Understanding Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer develops in the cells of the cervix. There are two main types:

  1. Squamous cell carcinoma, the most common type, which forms on the outer surface of the cervix
  2. Adenocarcinoma, which develops in the cervical canal

Most cervical cancers are linked to the human papillomavirus (HPV). Very early-stage cervical cancer often causes no symptoms, which is why screening is so important.

What Is Cervical Screening?

Cervical screening is designed to prevent cervical cancer, not just detect it. The test looks for high-risk types of HPV. If HPV is found, the sample is checked for abnormal cells that could develop into cancer if left untreated.

When Should You Be Screened?

International guidelines recommend cervical screening from age 25 through 64. Depending on age and results, screening is usually done every 3 to 5 years. Regular testing can catch changes early—often long before cancer develops.

Who Can Perform Cervical Screening?

Cervical screening can be performed by both a General Practitioner (GP) and an Obstetrician-Gynecologist (OBGYN). At Integra Healthcare, you can choose the provider you feel most comfortable with—both are fully trained to perform Pap smears and HPV tests.

Signs and Symptoms to Watch For

Early cervical cancer may not cause symptoms, but common signs can include:

  • Heavier periods than usual
  • Bleeding between periods, after sex, or after menopause
  • Unpleasant-smelling vaginal discharge
  • Pain or discomfort during sex
  • Recurrent urine infections
  • Lower tummy or back pain

If you experience any of these symptoms, don’t wait for your next screening—contact your GP or healthcare provider promptly. Early diagnosis makes treatment easier and more effective.

Why Screening Matters

Did you know that 1 in 3 people do not attend their cervical screening? If anxiety or discomfort has held you back, you’re not alone—and help is available. Screening is quick, confidential, and could save your life.
